My hydrangeas are turning red

The hydrangeas in my garden are turning deep claret red this late Autumn, from being pretty pink in the summer.  I don't really know why, but they do look stunning. A few flower mopheads are staying pink.

Does anybody know why?

  1. I think it is the cold that does it. Every year I end up with some like this and others that are beautiful shades of olive green. If you pick them in October you can put them straight in a vase without any water and you will have something to look at all winter. I picked some too early this year and they just shrivelled up.
